INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEASURING YOUR COUNTERTOPS

The illustrations below shows the most common kitchen design layouts:

1. To begin, you will start by sketching the layout of your countertops. As an example to get you started, we're going to use the
L + ISLAND
design to show you how to measure for your countertops in order to obtain an accurate estimate.

2. When calculating square footage for your countertops, it is best to divide the countertop area into sections as shown below:

3. Measure the length & depth of each piece in inches using a tape measure. For newly constructed cabinetry, measure from the wall to the front of the cabinet & add 1 1/2" to the measurement for overhang. Also add 1 1/2 to each side that is open & not touching an appliance or a wall for the overhang dimension.

4. Compute the square footage of your countertop project by recording all the measurements in the table below:

a. Measure each countertop section & record the length & depth dimensions of the sections (in inches, rounded to the nearest inch).

Countertop Sections
         Length         x           Depth           =           Area
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Total Square Inches:
÷
= Total Square Feet:
b. Compute the area of each section.

c. Add all the sections (1-8) together to calculate the total square inches.

d. Divide the total square inches by 144 to get the total square feet.

5. Next, record what each side of your pieces will border, whether a wall or cabinet, an appliance or nothing (an open side). This will determine where finished edges are required for estimation purposes. For instance:

  • The front edge of all countertops will require a finished edge, as well as any open sides not bordering a wall or an appliance. Mark these edges with an F.

  • Edges that border a wall or a cabinet will receive an unfinished edge. Mark all of these edges with a W.

  • If an edge borders an appliance, such as a refrigerator or stove, it will have a flat polished edge. Mark all of these edges with an A.

6. Other Options to Consider for Your Project:

  • Finished Cutouts - These cutouts are finished on the inside. If your sink is mounted underneath the countertop, you will need a finished cutout.

  • Unfinished Cutouts - These cutouts are not visible & do not require polishing on the inside. If you have a top-mounted sink or cooktop, then you will request unfinished cutouts.

  • Faucet Holes - Drilling into the countertop surface will be required for faucets, hot water dispensers, spray hoses & soap dispensers. You will be asked to indicate the number of items to drill for your project.

SKETCHING & MEASURING YOUR COUNTERTOP LAYOUT

1. Now it's your turn! Using the grid below, sketch the layout of your kitchen countertops.

2. Remember to divide your countertop area into sections as in #2 in the above instructions.

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
Total Square Inches:

b. Compute the area of each section.

c. Add all the sections (1-8) together to calculate the total square inches.

d. Divide the total square inches by 144 to get the total square feet.

5. Next, record on your drawing what each side of your pieces will border, whether a wall or cabinet, an appliance or nothing (an open side). This will determine where finished edges are required for estimation purposes. For instance, F for finished edges, W for edges touching a wall or cabinet, & A for edges bordering an appliance. (see above instructions.)
